Temperature screening camera to ease process while ensuring safety of pupils and teachers

With more schools reopening soon, teaching staff at schools across the country are working to ensure the standard operating procedures (SOP) set by Education Ministry are followed.
Temperature scanning and registration of every student before entry is a particular challenge for teachers and staff as it will be a time-consuming process, especially in schools with big enrolment.
As such, SJK(T) Puchong headmistress M. Packiam was delighted to receive a free temperature scanning camera from Green Packet Bhd chief operating officer Mike Lee ahead of the school’s reopening on July 15.
“I am extremely grateful for their generous donation, ” she said at the handover ceremony at the school.
The temperature scanning camera can detect a person’s temperature within 0.5m in one to two seconds, where the screen will turn green if the person’s temperature is below 37.5°C and flash red if the person has a higher body temperature.
“The addition of this scanner will ensure the safety of all pupils and teachers in the school by avoiding the build-up of a large crowd of pupils waiting to be screened.
“This contribution will also make us the first Tamil school in the country utilising this technology for temperature screening, ” said Packiam.
The school has 860 primary and preschool pupils, 50 teachers and 15 staff members, including cleaners, canteen operators and security guards.
Present at the handover ceremony were Kinrara assemblyman Ng Sze Han, Subang Jaya Municipal (MPSJ) councillor George Yap as well
as SJK(T) Puchong Parent-Teacher Association representatives.
“One unit each of this temperature scanning camera will also be given to SMK Pusat Bandar Puchong 1 and SJK(C) Yak Chee, which were specifically chosen as they are the three largest schools in the Kinrara constituency, ” said Ng.
Lee said these temperature scanners had facial recognition technology.
“It can detect pupils’ and teachers’ faces and automatically record their name, time and date of entry as well as body temperature.”
He assured that a person’s temperature could be detected even if the person was wearing a face mask.
“If desired, the camera settings can be configured by teachers as a method of cashless payments by simply scanning a person’s face, which automatically connects them to an e-wallet system.
“For example, if a parent loads RM5 into their child’s e-wallet, the child is able to pay for food at the cafeteria by scanning their face, which then automatically deducts the correct amount from their e-wallet, ” he explained.
This feature could be utilised to prevent spread of viruses among schoolchildren, he added.
Each temperature screening camera costs RM7,000.
