Kuala Lumpur, 24 February 2011 – Greenpacket, a leading developer of next generation mobile broadband and networking solutions, has consolidated its position as the leader in the African WiMAX space after sealing a WiMAX modem supply deal with Zimbabwe internet service and VoIP provider Aptics Trading.
With four contract wins within a one-year period, Greenpacket now has more than 35 percent of the African mobile WiMAX market.
Kelvin Lee, Senior General Manager of Green Packet Berhad said, “Our consecutive wins in the region prove that we have become the firm favourite. We attribute our success to engaging with operators directly. We have built significant traction in countries like South Africa, Haiti, Kenya, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Nigeria where we are confident of capturing more market share. Our products fit the region’s operational landscape where operators highly appreciate the key features of Greenpacket modems such as high gain antenna, high transmission power and voice capabilities.”
Mobile WiMAX technology appeals to greenfield operators as it bridges the gap left open by limited wireline infrastructure; and the lower cost of deployment suits Africa’s challenging economic landscape where ARPU (average revenue per user) is low but demand for broadband is high. Joining the ranks of service providers wanting to meet the continent’s fast rising demand for quality broadband is Aptics Trading.
Commenting on the deal, Jahdiel Mafukidze, Chief Executive Officer of Aptics Trading said, “Our commitment is to deliver high quality broadband experiences and service to our customers. This is why we have chosen Greenpacket’s award winning WiMAX modems as they have proven to deliver best-in-class performance. On top of that, the Greenpacket team has demonstrated world-class customer service levels and intense commitment to the advancement of 4G wireless technology with their innovative product roadmap.”
Africa is a sunrise market for mobile WiMAX presenting vast opportunities. In the past year, mobile WiMAX take-up jumped five-fold to 200,000 subscribers, as reported by ABI Research, and it is expected to double in 2011. Mobile WiMAX will continue to grow at 34 percent CAGR till 2015. The new undersea cable fiber optics in the continent had also spurred growth and appetite for fast broadband connection.
Lee expressed confidence that mobile WiMAX is set for a new wave of growth driven by broadband demand in fast developing and underserved regions. On the technology front, he commented, “While there may be a convergence of technologies in the future, we cannot ignore the fact that there is current demand for broadband to answer. Greenpacket will continue to develop highly innovative products to meet these demands.”
Greenpacket is set to introduce three new 4G products within the next two quarters. The next in line is a pocket modem which will allow operators to introduce new service experiences to their customers. Lee revealed that operators have shown strong interest in its soon-to-be-released pocket modem and the Company has high expectations for the product. Recently, Greenpacket’s DX WiMAX Indoor VoIP Modem (DX) and UH WiMAX USB High Gain Modem (UH) were each awarded the 4GWE Product of the Year Award for the most innovative products brought to market in 2010.
