4 June 2010, Kuala Lumpur – Greenpacket, a leading developer of next generation mobile broadband and networking solutions, is confident that their Intouch Connection Manager (Intouch CM) solution is able to address increasing network congestion issues faced by operators in the U.S.

Greenpacket, which was founded in the Silicon Valley in the year 2000, is re-establishing its presence in the U.S. market with the set up of additional Sales and Support offices encouraged by strong demand for its solutions. The Company is currently in trials with a number of operators and service providers in the country to implement its cost-effective Intouch CM solution to offload data to an alternative network.

Kelvin Lee, Senior General Manager of Greenpacket said, “Consumers today use much more data on the go than before, driven by the increasing use of connected devices such as smartphones and embedded laptops. The popularity of video streaming services like YouTube and Hulu will constantly push more demand for mobile data bandwidth.”

Research by Cisco found that demand for mobile data traffic in North America is expected to grow 117% annually for the next five years up till 2014. By then, demand for video will reach 66% of the world’s mobile data traffic. Meanwhile, Coda Research Consultancy forecasted that U.S. mobile handset data traffic will increase 41 times to 327 petabytes per month in 2015 from 8 petabytes per month this year.

Greenpacket recognizes that the phenomenal growth in mobile data usage could cripple mobile networks in metropolitan ‘hot zones’ such as Manhattan where daytime population can rise two-fold.

Lee said, “It does not make economical sense for operators to increase network capacities to cope with increased data traffic during the day only to have it under-utilized the rest of the time. Therefore, a long-term cost-effective solution is to extend the network capacity by offloading data to alternative networks.”

Lee cited an example whereby AT&T set up a free WiFi hotspot for their customers at Times Square in New York City to ease data congestion. Devices attuned to the WiFi hotspot will automatically switch over when within range thus freeing up valuable 3G bandwidth.

WiFi networks have fewer regulations as opposed to the setting up of cell sites, and are much less expensive in terms of CAPEX, OPEX, and truck roll. However, Lee cautioned that the network handover must be non-disruptive to the customer and with minimal or no intervention at all.

“Customers just want things to work, therefore, operators will need a solution that seamlessly transfers the user from one network to another,” added Lee.

Operators can deploy the Intouch CM solution to intelligently and effortlessly manage their customers’ access network connections to ensure that they are always connected to the best available network. In the case of congested 3G data networks, operators can effortlessly shift their customers to an available and faster WiFi network to continue fulfilling their data demand. This effectively frees up their 3G network for voice calls or even to accommodate more customers on the network. Using Mobile IP technology, the handover process from one network to another is a seamless experience to customers.

“According to our research, proper implementation of data offloading has a direct impact of about 12 per cent to operator’s backhaul OPEX based on a conservative five-year Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis,” said Lee.

Greenpacket’s award-winning and field-tested solutions had earned the Company a solid track record and credibility among global Telcos. Moreover, the Company’s sound business fundamentals for sustainable profitability had also caught the eye of both The Capital Group Companies Inc via its fund, Smallcap World Fund and Intel’s global investment organization, Intel Capital, as one of their portfolio companies.
