Spokesperson: CC Puan, Group Managing Director & Group CEO of Green Packet Berhad
Green Packet Berhad (“Green Packet”) is encouraged by the Government’s statement that Budget 2010 will focus on increasing productivity based on a knowledge-based economy, research, development and innovation. Green Packet is a leading developer of Next Generation Mobile Broadband and Networking Solutions, and WiMAX broadband operator and service provider via its subsidiary Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (“P1”).
We expect the Budget will have some clear policies and initiatives to support the achievement of 50% household broadband penetration by 2010, the key catalyst of a knowledge economy. Further, we expect the Government to introduce policies, initiatives and programs to spur local innovation and raise the global competitiveness of our ICT industry.
Intense focus on making available high speed and affordable broadband will sustain the positive growth of the ICT industry, and in the long run, benefit any industry and the society at large.
However, more needs to be done to not only achieve the Government’s 2010 broadband penetration target but to play catch up with countries like Singapore, Korea and Hong Kong with broadband penetration of close to or above 100%. As a WiMAX broadband operator and service provider via Packet One (Networks) Malaysia Sdn Bhd, and investing heavily to build the network infrastructure, we hope for policies that will stimulate our further broadband investments – particularly in underserved areas. These may include tax incentives, grants and so forth. We also welcome measures aimed at promoting user adoption such as awareness and training programs, and subsidies for hardware and service packages.
A Budget that fulfills our wish list will have a great impact on our future growth to be a homegrown and globally recognized MNC technology Company.
Currently, Green Packet is selling our products and solutions to over 35 countries and ranks in the top 1 or 2 in Asia as a provider of WiMAX equipment, and Connection Manager Solutions in the WiMAX and GSM space. We have a mission to build a truly multinational homegrown technology company, so clearly, we would like the Government to pass a budget which helps to improve our opportunities in other markets around the world as well as locally. We would like to see policies and incentives implemented which support us through our value chain from talent development, to R&D grants, to business development and global expansion, and international marketing & promotion; all of which will help Green Packet to compete globally and be a strong contributor to Malaysia’s GDP.
We also see ample opportunities for the country to leverage Green Packet and P1’s achievement in the world’s WiMAX industry. P1 which just won Best Start Up Company in MSC APICTA is actually placed in the world’s top three in terms of subscriber number and size of network, which will get bigger as we got the green light to go nationwide to East Malaysia just recently.
Many aspiring operators want to learn from our success. They will also look to our Government and Regulators because Malaysia is ahead of many countries in awarding the WiMAX spectrum licenses. We have a very real opportunity to develop a successful WiMAX Hub to serve the region and the OIC member countries, and encourage foreign direct investments from the international WiMAX industry. We hope the Government will give fair focus to WiMAX, a proven 4G technology.
Regardless of the Budget announcement, Green Packet will continue to focus on our long-term business strategy. This includes increasing the coverage and improving our customer service experience of our P1 WiMAX network; as well as the continuous development of new hardware and software solutions for Telecommunications providers of WiMAX, 3G and GSM networks, locally and internationally.
