Malaysia ’s leading WiMAX telco plans to deliver “broadband for all” promise by extending its next-generation broadband network to Sabah & Sarawak
PETALING JAYA – Packet One Networks ( Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (“P1”), Malaysia’s first and leading WiMAX telco, announced today that P1 W1MAX – the company’s next-generation wireless broadband service, could be available in Sabah and Sarawak by as early as 2010.
The announcement underlines P1’s continuous efforts to deliver accessible, affordable and flexible broadband to all Malaysians. Currently, P1’s WiMAX network is the largest and fastest growing in the country with new coverage areas introduced almost every day.
In addition, P1 is on track to meet its target of covering 35% of Malaysia’s population within this year.
“ East Malaysia is a key market for P1 with tremendous potential. We’re definitely looking forward to empower both states with WiMAX. Expanding our P1 W1MAX network coverage is a top priority as it underlines our commitment to ensure that as many Malaysians have access to quality broadband with the flexibility of wireless connectivity at affordable prices,” said Michael Lai, Chief Executive Officer, P1.
Sabah and Sarawak are amongst the largest states in the country with a massive demand and need for widely available broadband access. Despite this, current broadband technologies cannot cope with the scattered population pattern and diverse geographical conditions prevalent in both states.
Developed for cost affective, speedy, wide-area deployment, P1 W1MAX is the perfect solution to address such challenges. The various advantages built into WiMAX technology could see an increase in broadband penetration throughout remote and underserved areas in East Malaysia.
“The Malaysian Government has targeted 50% broadband penetration by next year and we applaud this vision. At P1, we are committed to do all that we can to contribute and ultimately achieve this target. With the inherent strengths of WiMAX and our rapid network rollout, we hope to be able to increase the broadband penetration rate of both states substantially as soon as P1 W1MAX is available there,” Lai added.
With one of the fastest wireless broadband networks in the country, P1 believes that the availability of P1 W1MAX in East Malaysia will contribute positively to the development and progress of the local industries especially in tourism and agriculture – amongst the largest contributors to East Malaysia’s economy.
Specifically, the SME/SMI sector can benefit from the additional performance, reliability and affordability offered by P1 W1MAX which can provide easier access to a large international market through the Internet.

Recently, P1 simultaneously announced that it began covering key locations within Ipoh, Kuantan and Kuala Terengganu. With key markets in Klang Valley, Johor, Penang, Kedah, Perak, Pahang and Terengganu now covered with P1 W1MAX, P1 effectively has the nation’s widest WiMAX network.
