Kuala Lumpur, 11 th May 2009 – The Green Packet Group of Companies (The Group) cemented its position as an industry front runner in the world of WiMAX and convergent technologies after an impressive debut at the recent WiMAX Forum Congress Asia (WFCA). The event was held in Singapore from 28 th to 29 th April, 2009 and was attended by an estimated 2,000 strong delegation of international industry experts, global ICT operators and media.
Speaking to delegates and media during the WFCA event, Green Packet Group MD & CEO, Puan Chan Cheong (CC Puan) said, “Over the two days of the WFCA, our booth and meeting rooms have been overwhelmed by the sheer volume of interest from delegates, guests and media. The intense interest shown by visitors to The Group’s booth is a testimony to The Group’s total business model which is committed to bringing together the different streams of the WiMAX business. It is this end-to-end industry focus that is a key strength and clearly differentiates us in the international marketplace.”
Probably the best example of The Group’s synergistic end-to-end industry commitment came in the form of the Live WiMAX Network Tour which took delegates and media from Singapore to Johor Bahru Malaysia. During the tour, Green Packet and Malaysian WiMAX network operating sister company, Packet One Networks, showcased bandwidth superiority with a ‘speedometer’ test signal reaching an incredible 8.2Mbps while in motion around the streets of JB. Further proof points came from the flawless performance of the Intouch Connection Management Platform which seamlessly and automatically moved between WiMAX and WiFi networks based on best bandwidth availability, delivering uninterrupted downloads and crystal clear VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol).
It was this successful P1 WiMAX and Solutions demonstration that prompted WiMAX Forum President and Chairman, Ron Resnik to personally praise Green Packet for their innovation and delivery, comments made while he was officiating the signing of an agreement between Green Packet and Taiwan’s Tatung Infocomm.
The Tatung agreement, which follows hot on the heel of the Green Packet agreement with PCCW earlier in the year, will see Green Packet Solutions provide a customised and enhanced edition of its in-demand Intouch Connection Management Platform to deliver seamless mobility across networks over secured mobile VPN (Virtual Private Network). The agreement will also see the provision of a Value Added Services (VAS) software.
During the event, Green Packet also signed an agreement with GCT Semiconductor, a leading global supplier of mobile WiMAX solutions to develop a truly seamless solution for wireless devices to roam between WiFi and WiMAX networks. The collaboration will make available a powerful solution which allows end-users to roam seamlessly between WiFi and WiMAX networks; the world’s first on a single chipset.
The WFCA event also featured a presentation by Michael Lai, Chief Executive Officer, P1 to a room packed of audience. The presentation was delivered to a packed room which left standing room only. P1, the first in the world to deploy 802.16e 2.3GHz WiMAX, the largest WiMAX network and commercial roll-out outside of Korea and is credited globally as one of the more successful mass LIVE deployments to-date. P1 achieved its first subscriber base milestone in February 2009 hitting a subscriber base of 20,000 subscribers.
“The milestone achievement in February is again a show of our strong commitment to the Group’s business plan and strategy. By achieving our milestones, we have also positioned P1 and Malaysia as a WiMAX case study and success story for the world, and especially for emerging markets. As the number of base stations increase, our subscriber base also increases exponentially. This has forced us to revise our initial year end projections upwards and we are currently looking at a milestone of 250,000 subscribers and 35% national population coverage network by end of 2009,” said CC Puan.
Commenting further on the WiMAX deployment in Malaysia, CC Puan concluded, “Our targets and milestones for phase one are met, and we are commencing phase two. We are pleased to have already entered the phase where the gap between our extensive aggressive investment cycle and revenue is closing. By year end, we anticipate being EBITDA breakeven.”
An invaluable addition to the full spectrum of WiMAX offerings by the Group is consulting services via its WiMAX Global Services arm, Packet One International Pte. Ltd. or P1i. Leveraging on the tried and tested experience garnered from P1 Malaysia, and equipped with best business practices, innovation and in-market knowledge, P1i is well positioned to help any aspiring operator or country deploy WiMAX quickly and efficiently. According to CC Puan, P1i is showing promising traction with opportunities from South East Asia, South Asia, Middle East, Africa and Latin America regions – carving a niche and proving to be an emerging market expert.
CC Puan said, “We cannot ask for a better synergy which would help Green Packet to continue growing in line with our business strategy. Our momentum for WiMAX deployment in Malaysia is bringing the Group market-traction on all fronts.”
“Our all IP (Internet Protocol) technology backing and Green Packet Solution R&D contributes to P1’s leadership. Field-tested on P1’s LIVE network, we can also ensure software and hardware developed by Solutions has high customer relevance. Our combined expertise lends credibility to our WiMAX consulting services and so forth,” he elaborated.
The WiMAX momentum is not halted by the global economic crisis, and in fact, the industry estimated that there will be 3.8 million WiMAX users in Asia Pacific by the end 2009, and133 million worldwide by 2012.
