Kuala Lumpur – 1 August 2008 – Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (P1), a WiMAX converged telco and a subsidiary of Green Packet Berhad, made history today when it revealedthe selected areas in the Klang Valley that have immediate P1 W1MAX broadband coverage and introduced10 of Malaysia’s first paying WiMAX subscribers.
The announcement marks the availability of one of the first IEEE 802.16e 2.3GHz WiMAX network in the world.
“We have been working relentlessly over the last 16 months, testing the technology, deploying the network, forming alliances, creating WiMAX devices and tweaking customer service, toensureend-to-end user experience is of the highest quality,technologically andhumanly, possible,” said P1’s CEO, Michael Lai.
“Another area we place great emphasis on is certifications for our WiMAX equipment. The end-user modems, base stations and microwave links have received the necessary certifications by SIRIM. In addition, we have also received certification from the MalaysianNuclear Agency, MINT with regards to radiation that is emitted by P1 W1MAX transmitters. This confirms that the P1 W1MAX equipment complies with and is even below the radiation limit set by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP); meeting the necessary regulatory, technical and safety guidelines”.
“Therefore, it is with enormous satisfaction to be able to say today, thatP1 W1MAX has arrived in Malaysia. This is the beginning of a new chapter for Malaysians as we take another leap in realizing the objectives of the National Broadband Plan and MyICMS886, and make a positive difference in the way Malaysians live, learn, work and play.”
This critical milestone is also attributed to the Malaysian government, the Ministry of Energy, Water and Communications and SKMM for having the foresight to award the WiMAX license in Malaysia as early as March 2007; way ahead of many other countries in the region.
P1 W1MAX broadband is available immediately in the following areas: KLCC, Golden Triangle, Pekeliling, Setapak, Gombak, Seri Rampai, Sentul, Pudu, selected areas in Subang Jaya, USJ 1, USJ 7 andSubang Hi-Tech area.
In addition, by the end of 2008, P1targets to extend itsWiMAX broadband coverage to Petaling Jaya, Damansara, Klang and PortKlang within the Klang Valley; Johor Bahru; Kedah; Perak;Negeri Sembilan; Melaka and all major towns and cities in the West Coast of Peninsula Malaysia.
“With P1 W1MAX, Malaysians now have a better option to connect to the Internet via broadband. The world is evolving to Web 2.0 and Malaysians can now participate in the new Internet revolution wherethe wealth of rich media, interactive online information and knowledge are at the click of a mouse,” added Lai.
“I’d like to encourage as many fellow Malaysians in the Klang Valley who reside within the P1 W1MAX coverage areas to be among the first in the world to test WiMAX”, said Lai.
P1 had announced extensive user trials in mid June of 2008 and a number of trial users have already opted for paying subscriptions even before the announcement of P1 W1MAX packages, which will be revealed later this month.
