PETALING JAYA, Mon: Sunway Group and Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd (P1), Malaysia’s WiMAX converged telco, signed a Memorandum of Understanding today to enable Bandar Sunway to make history when it becomes the first Integrated Wireless Township in Malaysia, benefiting its 30,000 residents and two million visitors per year.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Sunway Group’s President, Dato’ Chew Chee Kin and Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd (P1)’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Lai for the Wireless@Sunway project. The MoU signing was witnessed by YB Hannah Yeoh, Subang Jaya Assemblywoman.

Dato’ Chew said the project which has already been completed, provides wireless broadband coverage to Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall, Sunway Lagoon Theme Park, Monash University Sunway Campus, Sunway University College, Sunway Metro and Sunway Mentari.

“Over 100 WiFi hotspots have been activated within these areas, currently benefiting business users, students and visitors of Bandar Sunway. This will also benefit some 30,000 residents and two million visitors to Bandar Sunway,” he said.

Lai said the Sunway Group is a leader in all areas that it specializes in. “So we are obviously proud that they have selected us as our preferred technology partner for the Wireless@Sunway project.

“The partnership between Bandar Sunway and P1 today, represents another one great step for P1, and another giant leap for the wireless broadband movement in Malaysia,” Lai informed.

“Phase two will involve deploying WiMAX to cover more areas in Bandar Sunway,” Lai said, alluding to the flourishing 800-acre Bandar Sunway, which is the Sunway Group’s flagship development.

Dato’ Chew called the creation of Bandar Sunway’s integrated wireless community “a significant milestone in bringing Internet power to the township’s community, and making it an even greater place to live in”.

“This will positively reflect on their options for telecommuting, learning, keeping an eye on their homes and family from remote locations, online shopping and getting entertainment information on the go," said Dato’ Chew.

He said the Sunway Group chose P1 as the preferred technology partner for the project as it is the next generation telecommunications service provider, while its strategic partnerships with Alcatel-Lucent and Intel put it far ahead of its competitors.

Dato’ Chew added that P1’s parent company, Green Packet Berhad, also has an excellent track record, and this also influenced our decision.

“Together with the Sunway Group today, we’ve once again proven our commitment to lead the pack in bridging the urban digital divide through wireless technology and realizing the Malaysian Government’s aspiration to enrich the lives of ALL Malaysians,” Lai informed.

Bandar Sunway’s "Resort Living within the City" lifestyle concept has received international recognition as one of Asia's most impressive and successful property developments.

Prior to the MOU, Bandar Sunway residents were primarily relying on DSL and cable modems for Internet connectivity, as most Malaysian townships currently do.
