KUALA LUMPUR, 17 December 2007 ¨C Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (P1), WiMAX licensee and subsidiary of Green Packet Berhad has been tasked to deploy 1,500 WiFi hotspots in Kuala Lumpur by May 2008 to mark the start of Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) and Suruhanjaya Komunikasi Multimedia Malaysia¡¯s (SKMM) ¡°KL Wireless Metropolitan Project¡± aimed at making Kuala Lumpur a world class wireless city by 2009.

The KL Wireless Metropolitan Project is one out of 5 main projects in SKMM¡¯s Klang Valley Broadband Push (KVBP90) plan developed to increase broadband coverage areas within Klang Valley and subsequently, to reinforce the foundation for a knowledge-based economy to further leapfrog the development and growth of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as a whole. It also supports the Government¡¯s National Broadband Plan to progress the nation and make it a knowledge-based economy.

Aside from offering free 512Kbps broadband connectivity for KLites and tourists for 2 years when fully deployed, the project hopes to help boost tourism, economic capabilities and social and education opportunities for the city.

With the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between P1, DBKL and SKMM, P1 will now begin the roll out of 1,500 WiFi hotspots, starting with the Golden Triangle, community areas and DBKL offices.

Speaking on P1¡¯s appointment as DBKL and SKMM¡¯s infrastructure provider, P1¡¯s CEO Michael Lai said, ¡°leveraging on the immense potential of WiMAX is a key consideration in making Kuala Lumpur a wireless city, a technology P1 will be capitalizing on as backhaul in the deployment of this project. WiMAX is set to change the way we work, live, learn and play, and P1 is committed to be the first to bring this truly mobile and personal experience to Malaysians.¡±

¡°We are excited to be a part of this initiative to turn Kuala Lumpur into a world class wireless metropolitan and aim to have 80% of its population enjoy wireless connectivity when fully deployed. In addition to this, P1 also looks forward to continue working with the Government on other similar projects that can help realise the National Broadband Plan,¡± added Michael.

To date, P1 has already contributed to the successful deployment of free WiFi service at the Raja Tun Uda Public Library in Shah Alam, another initiative under the KVBP90.
